Who Is An Independent Contractor? Adding Some Sanity to Confusing Standards The Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) and the Department of Labor (“DOL”) have announced initiatives to crack down on independent contractor misclassification. This program will be coordinated with state efforts to identify the misclassification of independent contractors. A misclassification potentially violates a wide range of federal and state laws, which in turn can mean significant liability for employers. The recent IRS initiative, for example, is expected to collect at least $7 billion in additional federal revenue over the next ten years. Read On
